Historical Fashion

Clothing that makes history

Custom clothing and costuming for cosplayers, dancers and anyone who wants to be able to move in their clothes - and still look great. Want the style but can't make it or find it? Tired of clothes that don't fit or fall apart? Historical Fashion will work with you to design and sew the garments you imagine.

We specialize in imaginative clothing & costumes for hard to fit women. Special occasion dresses. Historical costumes. Cosplay. Dancewear. Everything is sewn in the USA and custom made to fit YOU!

Yes, We Do Custom

Historical Fashion by Barbara Anne specializes in high quality custom garments. Working from your reference material and concepts, we create the clothing you dream about. Cosplay, LARP and reenactors are only the tip of the iceberg. We also design and sew unique formalwear, business and casual clothing. We aim for perfect fit and exceptional quality.

The Custom Process:

We start with a consultation - in person, chat, email - whatever contact method suits you best. We'll discuss your ideas, budget, some fabric ideas and timeframe. Your consultation is free.

If you decide to go ahead, our next step is measurement. We use 2 measurement systems - one for trousers and one for everything else. The trouser system is based on Patricia Allemong's method and requires quite a few measurements taken over underwear only. We might also have to write on you with eyeliner. (Don't worry, it's easy to remove!) Our full body system is the moulage as taught by Professer Kenneth King, instructor at FIT and contributing editor of Threads magazine. It requires an extensive set of measurements taken over snug clothing.

Both systems require accuracy and attention to detail. For this reason, we prefer customers commissioning fitted garments live within easy driving distance of Cleveland, Ohio. Ball gowns, sheath dresses, trousers,  and suits fall into this category. For garments with less critical fit -for example tunics, cloaks, loose shirts, harem or lounge pants - we have an online measurement form with complete instructions. We can also provide measurement guidance via Skype or Google Hangouts.
